Charbar

Our final wedding trip of the summer was to Calgary and fortunately, my mom and dad were willing to drive down to Calgary to spend some time visiting with me. While Byron was out with the guys for the Bachelor Party, my mom, dad and I decided to head out to try a new restaurant.

To determine where to go I turned to my most trusted resource, Twitter. I sent out a tweet to some of my Edmonton food blogger friends who then got me in touch with some of their Calgary food blogger friends and before I knew it I had about 15 different restaurant suggestions. Sadly, we really only had time to try one, so I decided to go with Charbar since we’d had such a lovely meal at Charcut last October.

The Burger’s Priest

we both really enjoyed our burgers at The Burger’s Priest. Their website states that they “believe in purity, simplicity and [providing] fresh ground beef, soft bun, simple toppings, griddled to perfection.” And from what I experienced, it appears as though they practice what they preach.

Kahuku Grill

On our third full day on Oahu, I planned a loop up to the North Shore that would include stops at the Dole Plantation, the Banzai Pipeline and the Polynesian Cultural Center. It was a full day with a lot of driving, but it was great to see so much of the island. Our first stop was at the Dole Plantation and we really had only one objective in mind: Dole Whip. If you have never had Dole Whip before it is a delicious pineapple flavoured soft serve, that is not very easy to come by. To get the real thing, you either need to go to Disneyland, Disney World or the Dole Plantation. Every time I visit a Disney Park I make sure to get my Dole Whip, so you better believe I was going to go straight to the source on Oahu and get some of that frozen pineapple goodness. Although it was a little “chilly” that morning, there was no way I wasn’t going to get my Dole Whip. So I indulged …

Smashburger

Smashburger 5000 Emerald Drive Sherwood Park, AB The first time I heard of Smashburger was about 3 years ago when I was down in Denver for work. I was looking for somewhere to eat for dinner and came across a Smashburger relatively close to the hotel that I was staying at. I am usually game for a good burger and the concept sounded intriguing. The timing never quite worked out to visit, but Smashburger was on my radar. Fast forward a couple of years to last summer when I was in Calgary for holidays. I had heard that Smashburger was in Calgary and thought it would be fun to try. I remember the food was ok, I wasn’t super impressed, but I think that mostly had to do with the burger I chose. It really could have been a whole combination of different factors, but I wasn’t overly thrilled. Jump forward another year, to a week or so ago, when I got an invitation to attend the VIP Preview Party of the Smashburger in Sherwood …

Mercer Tavern – Take 2

Mercer Tavern 10363 104 Street NW Edmonton, AB I first visited Mercer Tavern last September and I really wasn’t that impressed. The space was awesome, but the food just left a lot to be desired and with a fairly competitive market for Edmonton’s taste buds, mediocre food just doesn’t cut it. A couple of weeks ago, I paid Mercer Tavern a return visit. A few fellow food lovers, Jenn, Theresa and Lana, and myself were headed to a TedxEdmonton Salon event (about what else… food) in the Mercer Warehouse and Jenn, Theresa and I decided to grab dinner before the talk. Mercer Tavern seemed convenient, so I thought “hey, why not give it another try?” And, I am glad I did. I started with a glass of Magner’s Irish Cider, as they had it on tap, and, as always, it was an excellent, refreshing way to start off the evening. After looking through the menu, the 3 of us decided to order a few different appetizers and share them. We got 2 orders of fish tacos; 1 …

Delux Burger Bar

Delux Burger Bar (Magrath) 14111 23 Avenue Edmonton, AB Like a lot of families, my family always try to ensure that we have one night of the week where we have a family dinner together. For a lot of people I know it’s Sunday night dinner and for some of my friends it’s Friday night dinner; we fall into the Sunday night category. A few weeks ago, my brother was out-of-town on a ski trip and neither my mom, dad or I felt like cooking, so we decided to try out the new Delux Burger Bar in Magrath. Delux is probably my favourite restaurant in the Century Hospitality Group. I have found that some of the other Century restaurants that I have been to seem to charge a lot for kinda so-so food. Although Delux does charge more for a burger than a lot of other places, the prices aren’t unreasonable and the burgers and fries are always pretty tasty. Plus, I really like the atmosphere of Delux, it’s always a fun place to go! …

The Best Burger Ever

Ever since going to the Mosh-Burger pop-up dinners earlier this fall I have been wanting to grind my own beef to make burgers at home. I searched the internet for guidance and came across Alton Brown’s recipe for the Burger of the Gods. I used Alton’s recipe and my observations from the mosh-burger pop-up to come up with my own method and recipe. My mom and I headed to Acme Meat Market, a small, local butcher to get the meat for the burger. Alton’s recipe called for 8 ounces each of chuck and sirloin, however I opted for a pound and a half of chuck and 1 large sirloin steak (I think it was a bit more than half a pound), just based on what was cut and ready to go. I also opted to fry my burger in some canola oil and butter (for flavour) after seeing how delicious the butter made the burgers taste at the mosh-burger event. The Best Burger Ever INGREDIENTS: – 1 1/2 pounds chuck – 1 sirloin steak (about half a …

Mosh Burger Pop Up Dinner – Take 2

Last night I went to the second Mosh Burger Pop Up Dinner. This time the event was held at Accent Lounge. I really enjoyed my burger at the first Pop Up Dinner, however I had a few concerns with how the event was run. Mainly that the diners were having to wait in line outside of the restaurant, while our tables sat empty. Well actually, our drinks were sitting on them… This time, however, it seemed like the organizers decided to change things up a bit and many of my concerns were addressed. Although the event officially started at 6:30, I suggested to my dining companions, my friend, Mike, and my brother, Nick, that we meet me there at 6:00 in order to beat any rush. I’m glad we arrived when we did, as we were able to easily snag a table. Within a few minutes of sitting down, the restaurant was pretty much full. It was nice to see that this time a menu had been prepared outlining the options for the evening. I …

Mosh Burger Pop Up Dinner

Every Tuesday morning I faithfully check out Only Here For The Food to stay up-to-date with the local Edmonton food scene. Thank you, Sharon, for posting your weekly notes! This week I noticed a link to a post on Edmonton Journal Food writer Lianne Faulder’s food blog, Eat My Words, describing a really cool sounding food event, Mosh Burger. The Red Star Pub on Jasper Avenue was going to play host to a pop-up dinner, where real “American-style” burgers would be served on the rarer side. So last night I headed downtown to meet up with my friend Lana and her friend Matt to try out these burgers. Red Star was packed by the time I got there at 6:15, but luckily Lana and Matt had been able to snag the last table. We ordered our drinks and were told that they were just setting everything up outside and that once they were ready we were welcome to head out and get in line. Just after 6:30 everyone was making their way outside to grab …
