Cook Fresh Pasta Masterclass at Get Cooking!

We started the class by making our own pasta dough, and it's really so simple: eggs and flour.

For the past few months, I have been having a hard time sitting down to blog. I could give you a hundred different excuses (I had a ridiculously long-lasting summer cold, I was travelling a lot, my brother got married, I was busy with friends, I was busy with work, etcetera, etcetera) but I think at the heart of it, I just needed something to inspire me. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had a ton of really good meals (I mean, I just went to NYC) and I’ve had a lot of great food experiences, but nothing had given me an overwhelming urge to get a post up.

That is, until I took a class with Get Cooking. This summer, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting the chefs at Get Cooking, when I attended the Tangle Ridge Ranch Slow Food Event. Since then, I’ve seen them out and around Edmonton, at different food events, and at the opening of the new Get Cooking kitchen. Ever since then, I have been wanting to take a cooking class with them. And it just so happened that one of my goals for 2014 was to learn to make fresh pasta. So, I got in touch with Kathryn, the owner of Get Cooking, and got myself and my friend Laura signed up for a fresh pasta making class.

DSC05509Fast forward a couple of weeks and we headed over to the Get Cooking kitchen on a snowy Tuesday night for our 4 hour class with chefs Kathryn and Israel. From what I have seen it looks like the classes generally have a maximum of 12 people and for our class, there were 9 people signed up. So, the kitchen is never too crowded and there is more than enough one-on-one time for everyone.

Get Cooking’s space is awesome. The kitchen is huge and cook’s dream, as it is stocked with all sorts of awesome kitchen gear and delicious ingredients. There was enough cooking space for everyone, no one was bumping elbows and everyone could see Kathryn and Israel no problem.

DSC05510We started the class by making our own pasta dough, and it’s really so simple: eggs and flour. After mixing and kneading the dough, we wrapped it up in some cling wrap and let it rest.

While we waited, we made a quick Ricotta Gnocchi with a fresh Cherry Tomato sauce. The gnocchi was so fast and easy to prepare. And the Cherry Tomato sauce was so fresh and simple. Unfortunately I don’t have a picture of the gnocchi, as I ate it way too fast, so you will just have to take my word that it was delicious.

DSC05525After the dough rested, we started rolling it out and cutting our fresh pasta. We made two cut pastas and one stuffed pasta, along with 3 delicious sauces. We started with Tagliatelle with Basil Pesto, then moved on to Butternut Squash Ravioli with Walnut Sauce and then finally, Pappardelle with Bolognese.

DSC05531Each pasta was incredibly delicious; so fresh and so simple. I had thought that the fresh pasta might be one of those things that is just better ordered at a restaurant, too finicky and time-consuming to make at home, but after this class I really don’t think that is the case. Yes, it does take time, but so do a lot of good things. All of the little tips and tricks that Israel and Kathryn taught us, made the world of a difference. And I can say that honestly, because I have since taken the plunge and made fresh pasta at home. Making the fresh pasta took time, but it didn’t test my patience and cause me to pull my hair out. The process really was pretty straight forward and easy to do at home.

DSC05541Both Laura and I really, really enjoyed the class at Get Cooking. Kathryn and Israel were so incredibly patient and knowledgable. And most importantly, the food we made was delicious. The recipes were all really very straightforward and simple; good food, made with really good ingredients. I’ve (successfully!) made a couple of these recipes at home and I can’t wait to try out the rest for my family, friends and boyfriend.

Laura and I have already started talking about what class we might want to take next and it’s a hard choice because Get Cooking offers all sorts of different classes, from cooking to cocktails. And I’ve heard nothing but great things about all of them. I’d also like to point out, that I did in fact pay for this class, so all these thoughts, of course, really are my own. I really just think Get Cooking has an awesome thing going on and has become a really cool part of the Edmonton food scene. The class I went to was a lot of fun and totally inspired me to try something new. I can’t wait to take my next class with Get Cooking and I would recommend it to pretty much anyone.
