This past Saturday our dinner club headed to Tropika in Edmonton’s south side to sample some Malaysian cuisine. I always love the food at Tropika so I was looking forward to the meal all day Saturday. We decided to pick a bunch of different dishes off the menu and share them between all of us. I really like eating dinner like this because it means I get to try all sorts of different food and often its food I wouldn’t necessarily pick out myself.
We started with the fried calamari off the appetizer menu. I thought it was pretty good, it had a little bit of a kick to it, however it was a little greasier than I would have liked. The calamari was good, but nothing special and it didn’t seem particularly Malaysian to me.
We also shared a big plate of roti. The roti was hot and delicious and the sauce had just the right amount of spice, there was a pleasant heat, but not so much to overwhelm the flavour.
After that most of the food came out pretty quickly. We had the Sambal Bunchies, which are probably the best green beans ever. I always get the Sambal Bunchies at Tropika and they are always, always delicious. I don’t know how Tropika prepares these green beans, but they are amazing. Crack beans!
We had 2 different types of noodles: pad thai and fried hookien mee. The pad thai was very good, although there wasn’t a ton of “stuff” in it, it was mostly just noodles. It also had a different flavour than the pad thai I’ve had at the Thai restaurants in Edmonton, it seemed slightly sweeter. The fried hookien mee had various different types of noodles stir fried together with shrimp and calamari.
We also ordered the fried pineapple rice off the menu. It was good, but it didn’t seem that special other than there were little chunks of pineapple in the rice and it was served in a pineapple, which did make for a nice presentation.
We had 2 different meat dishes. Tropika Homestyle Chicken, which is pieces of chicken that are marinated in spices, that add a unique sweetness, and then deep fried. SO GOOD! We also ordered rendang lembu, which is a beef curry. I am not the biggest curry fan, so it wasn’t my favourite, but everybody else seemed to really enjoy it.
Last to come out was the sweet and sour fish, which was a fan fried Pomfret fish covered in a sweet and sour sauce. I wasn’t expecting to like this dish, but I really enjoyed it. The fish tasted very fresh and not “fishy” and the sweet and sour sauce complemented, rather than overwhelmed, the delicate flavour and texture of the fish.
We had a great meal at Tropika. The restaurant was really busy and had a great atmosphere for a large group. It was fun to try out all of the different foods and flavours and all for a really good price. With tax and tip (but without drinks) we each paid about $19. So much great food, for such a great price!
After dinner we headed to Block 1912 for some gelato to finish off the evening. There is no better dessert than ice cream!
