Having lived in Edmonton’s westside for my entire life I have probably driven past Tasty Tomato on Stony Plain Road a few hundred times and despite my love for Italian food, I have no memory of ever eating there before. My friend, Irene, and I had tickets to see Jersey Boys at the Jubilee Auditorium last Thursday and I thought Italian for dinner would be an excellent way to start the evening. Apparently New Jersey = Italian Food in my books, I must watch too much Jersey Shore or Real Housewives of New Jersey…

We made our way to Tasty Tomato after work and when I arrived at the restaurant at about 5:15 it was still pretty quiet. By the time we left at about 6:45 the restaurant was packed, so you can tell it is popular, local establishment.

We were given some complimentary focaccia bread and oil and vinegar to start. The bread was really good.. so good I had to make sure to not eat too much so that I would still have room for my pasta.

Irene ordered the special which was shrimp, scallops, mushrooms and linguine in a brandy rosé sauce. She let me have a taste, the brandy made the sauce just a little bit sweet, it was very good!

I asked Irene for her thoughts on her pasta and here is what she had to say:“The pasta was really fresh tasting. Just like how my Italian grandma would make it (if I was Italian).”

Couldn’t have said it any better myself…

I ordered the Fusilli alla Vesuviana, which was fusilli pasta tossed in a tomato cream sauce and then smothered in mozzarella and parmesan cheese and baked in the oven. I thought it was pretty yummy, but I mean really, how can you go wrong with anything baked in cheese? My only comment was that the tomato cream sauce didn’t seem very creamy… but it was still delicious.

Overall, Tasty Tomato was a nice little place for Italian food. The prices were decent, the food was good and the portion sizes were large. However, I think Piccolino Bistro is still my favourite place for Italian in Edmonton… and it’s just down the street!

I had a wonderfull evening. The company was great, the food was delicious and the show was awesome!

Happy Tuesday!

  1. I assure you, you have eaten at the Tasty Tomato before, but it was many years ago. I would say that I, too, prefer Piccolinos, and it’s great to see aboth small, local businesses thrive.
